Ariocarpus fissuratus

Ariocarpus fissuratus, from Texas, New Mexico and northern Mexico is a very slow growing cacti. It can take 20 years to reach flowering size, and reaches a diameter of eight inches. Named for the fissured surface of it's tubercules, it's common names are Chautle Living Rock or False Peyote.
Ariocarpus fissuratus has a large tap root and shrivels down to the ground in times of drought. This makes it very hard to find in the wild, except when producing it's gorgeous pink or magenta flowers in fall. I don't have any pictures yet of the flower, but Trent, a fellow member of the Davesgarden.com gardening forums has agreed to let me use his. Thanks Trent! Look for a gallery of Trents pics in the "Friends" section.
