Cereus hildmannianus
ssp. uruguayanus

A large specimen in the front yard
flowering in late August

Native to Peru, Brazil and Argentina, Cereus hildmannianus ssp uruguayanus is a many branched columnar cacti that can get to 30 feet tall in the wild. It is has magnificent nocturnal flowers and large red edible fruits. Fairly fast growing once established, this is a gorgeosus and popular landscape plant if you have the space.
This one was planted in the yard about twelve years ago. It was a single 12 inch tip cutting then. It flowers profusely on and off throughout the summer. Flowers open at night but are still open first thing in the morning. It's the best time to get pics of them. I keep it pruned back so it doesn't get too big. I also have the monstrose form.
These plants are amazing! I took a bunch of cuttings of both late last season. Unrooted they continued to flower for me for almost a month on my patio. Click below for more pictures.
