Echinocereus viridiflorus var davisii

Found only in one small area of Brewster County, Texas, Echinocereus viridiflorus var davisii is a rare diminutive and beautifully spined cactus. At maturity plants are only and inch thick and a couple inches tall. It's reported that they are usually solitary but one of the three I recently acquired has an offset. Perhaps the offset more often incultivation than in the wild. Like other Echinocereus, in times of drought and in winter the plant will shrink to almost nothing, making it difficult to find in the wild except for rainy periods. Flower are produced in spring and are the same greenish yellow as Echinocereus viridiflorus.
I consider myself fortunate to have come cross this plant. It is very rare even in cultivation. So imagine my surprise when I came across three of them in the 99 cent section at Home Depot. I grabbed all three.
