Echinopsis subdenudata

This pretty little plant comes from Bolivia. It starts out as a little fuzzy tennis ball sized plant which grows columnar with age, sometimes offsetting and sometimes not. The species name alludes to what appears to be spinelessness, but don't let the wooly areoles fool you. There's sharp spines hidden in there. Did I say it was a little plant? What the plant lacks in size it makes up for with it's flowers. They are huge! They appear in spring and only open for one day (In some cases night). But one plant can produce several at a time. This must be a spectacular sight.
I thought this was a cute but somewhat plain Jane of a cacti, but then this one awed me with it's flower! It was 8 inches long and almost 6 inches across. I thought it would tip the plant over! Luckily the flowers don't weigh much.
