Eriosyce senilis

A long spined form

From the Rio Choapa region of Chile, Eriosyce senilis is a variable globular with fine paper like spines. It is globular at first and then grows slightly columnar with age to about 7 inches tall and 3 inches around. Spination varies between species and subspecies, the type plant having long curly tan or white spines that completely obscure the plant, while others have spines that are much shorter. The shorter spined form was formerly know as Eriosyce multicolor and can have black spines. Eriosysce senilis produces magnificent magenta flowers with neon yellow throats in spring.
I thought this plant was pretty cool to start with but then it knocked me out with it's flowers. In good light they have an actual glow to them. Absolutely gorgeous!
