Ferocactus chrysacanthus

Native to the Baja Peninsula and surrounding islands, Ferocactus chrysacanthus is a gorgeous gold spined barrel that can reach a foot in diameter and 3 feet in height. Chrysacanthus is Greek for "golden spined" and few other Feros have spines as magnificently colored. They look like they are carved from amber. I have two of these and at least one will go in the ground in spring where it should give me gold or orange flowers in summer. The other I think I'll grow on in a large pot as a specimen plant.

Update June 2nd 2006, we got flowers on one in the garden! Click below for more pictures.
