Mammillaria hahniana "Old Lady Cactus"

From Guanajuato Mexico, Mammillaria hahniana is an often clumping globular cactus to 3 inches in diameter. It gets it's common name from the grayish white hairs that protect it from the harsh sun in it's native habitat. A very variable species, some have short or almost nonexistent hairs while others like the cultivar "Superba" above are completely covered. Small pink to red flowers appear in a ring around the crown of the plant in winter.
Unfortunately I lost my "Superba". I didn't even notice because it was so furry. Then one day I looked at it and it seemed somehow smaller and hard. It seems I didn't water it enough and it dehydrated. Strangely even though it's dead the fur still looked good. So I left the hulk in the ground as a sort of memorial. I also have a shorter haired version. It flowerd for me several times this winter.
