Grusonia invicta "Devils Cholla"

A Grusonia invicta in my collection
     Native to Baja California and Mexico, Grusonia invicta is a low growing fiercely spined cholla to 1.5 feet high and 3 feet in spread. Also called "Dagger Cholla" it has some of the wickedest spines I've ever seen! The new growth spines are a bright red, immature segments a stunning purple and flowers yellow.
     This is one I picked up in Phoenix at a cacti show at the Desert Botanical Gardens. It goes in the yard somewhere. Below is a pic of a patch of it flowering at the Desert Museum in Tucson, and some closeups of new growth spines and segments.
