Parodia magnifica

From Brazil, Parodia magnifica is a golden spined clumping cactus with heads up to 5 inches around and 12 inches tall. The one above is at least that. It's a pretty gem I discovered flowering in someones side yard driving through a Tucson neighborhood. The golden spines are soft and flexible, nearly impossible to poke yourself with. In time they form a thick fringe along the ribs of the plant. The yellow flowers show up in spring on larger plants. The one below is a lovely little three incher in my garden after a July rain and the one on the right a magnificent specimen in full bloom at B&B Cactus.
