A healthy patch of Stapelia grandiflora in my garden
Also from Zambia and South Africa, Stapelia grandiflora is very similar in appearance to Stapelia gigantea. Aside from the flower the only difference I can detect is the groove between ribs is not as deep and the stems are a little thinner. It's flowers are not as large, maybe 6 to 8 inches and are a deep maroon color.
I got some cuttings of this from a friend a few years back. I have potfulls of it everywhere and a big patch in the ground. One thing I will say for this plant is it's extremely easy to grow and as hardy and tough as S. gigantea. As with S. gigantea I don't detect that strong an odor from the flowers.
